GDS Service Standards

There are 14 standard ones however some departments have added additional ones where they define something unique about there services such as the NHS

1. Understand users and their needs

2. Solve a whole problem for users

3. Provide a joined up experience across all channels

This can often be a challenge and requires thinking and working outside the silos and sometime across departments.

4. Make the service simple to use

Follow UX design best practise, and test with people that user the service.

5. Make sure everyone can use the service

A hot topic, what about users without access to technology, but also thinking about accessability.

6. Have a multidisciplinary team

What is a team anyway? services are co-created by all of the stakeholders

7. Use agile ways of working

8. Iterate and improve frequently

Not just within the project! but as a part of operating the service.

9. Create a secure service which protects users’ privacy

10. Define what success looks like and publish performance data

Defining sucess for both the business and the service customers

11. Choose the right tools and technology

12. Make new source code open

13. Use and contribute to open standards, common components and patterns

just good UX design and citizenship

14. Operate a reliable service
